On 13 October 2017, the Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, presented the extension of the new tram network to Cloche d'Or. By 2021, it will be able to serve the districts of Bonnevoie, Howald, Ban de Gasperich and Cloche d'Or.

This extension will connect the Bonnevoie, Howald and Cloche d'Or interchanges. The design of this extension is being carried out in close consultation with the National Roads Administration (PCH), which is responsible for the project management of the neighbouring road projects.

Over a length of 4.9 km, 7 stations will serve the neighbourhoods, including 3 major interchange hubs:

  • Bonnevoie-Lycée
  • Howald
  • Cloche d'Or

This project is part of the urban development of Luxembourg City and Hesperange.

Financing

The total cost of building this extension is estimated at 114,900,000 euros excluding VAT, financed by the State for the line between the Central Station and the Cloche d'Or.

A total of 12 trains will complete the fleet of 21 trains that will run between Luxexpo and the Central Station. The facilities of the current storage and maintenance centre are already designed to accommodate and maintain the trains required to operate the 16 km route without additional investment.

At peak times, the tram will serve all stations between Lycée Bonnevoie and Luxexpo every 3 minutes. Beyond that, in the direction of Cloche d'Or and Findel, the crossing frequency will be 6 minutes.
