Launch of a road safety campaign during the hunting season
On Friday 13 October 2023, the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, together with Road Safety a.s.b.l. and the Saint-Hubert Hunters Federation of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg a.s.b.l., decided to launch a prevention campaign to raise awareness among all road users of the need to be extra vigilant during the hunting season, which begins this year on 14 October and runs until 17 December 2023.
During the hunting season, motorists are being urged to pay extra attention to the roadside, especially where there are road signs warning of the risk of wild animals, and to adjust their speed when driving through a wooded area.
If you come across a wild animal on the road, reduce your speed, honk your horn and turn on your dipped headlights.
Caution: the brightness of the headlights may disturb the animals. Wild animals often travel in packs.
If a collision is unavoidable, under no circumstances should you try to avoid the animal. In fact, it is advisable to hold the steering wheel firmly in both hands while continuing to drive in a straight line and applying an emergency braking.
In the event of a collision with game, it is essential:
- to wear a safety waistcoat when leaving the vehicle;
- switch on the hazard warning lights;
- secure the scene of the accident
- and finally inform the police about the accident.
You are also strongly advised not to touch or move the injured or deceased animal.
The police will take charge of the situation or contact the relevant departments.
Finally, walkers are advised to avoid these areas during the hunting season.
All the dates and locations of the battues can be consulted at www.geoportail.lu.
The campaign kicks off on Saturday 14 October 2023 and will be broadcast on the radio, on social networks and on the digital screens of RGTR network buses.
