Navigation permit

Anyone - over the age of 16* - wishing to navigate a boat must hold a navigation permit.

(*though with compulsory parental authorisation for minors)

Categories

There are 4 categories of navigation permits:

  • River permit: authorises the holder to drive a pleasure craft of up to 20 metres in length on inland waters, rivers, lakes, etc.
  • Coastal permit: authorises the holder to operate a pleasure craft up to 7 metres in length, without a cabin, in coastal waters up to 3 miles from the coast.
  • Coastal permit Plus: authorises its holder to drive a pleasure craft of up to 20 metres in length in coastal waters up to 6 miles from the coast.
  • Sea permit ("sait and motor" or "motor" only): authorises its holder to drive a pleasure craft of up to 24 metres in length in maritime waters, with no navigation zone restrictions.

Procedures

Applicants should apply directly to one of the training organisations approved by the "Commissariat aux affaires maritimes", which will be responsible for preparing them for the navigation permit examination.
