Vehicles - Registration and on-board documents
When driving, all motorists must carry a certain number of valid on-board documents:
- driving licence;
- insurance certificate;
- registration certificate;
- tax sticker, which is proof of payment of the annual tax;
- certificate of conformity (COC) or a copy certified by the SNCA: for vehicles registered for the first time after 1 February 2016.
Any self-propelled vehicle using the public highway must be registered and meet technical compliance criteria. Therefore, before being admitted to road traffic, vehicles must be:
- approved;
- registred;
- in addition, they must be periodically inspected by a roadworthiness technical inspection body approved by the minister responsible for transport.
The different vehicle categories are defined by their technical characteristics or their use.
A specific driving licence is required depending on the category.
