Security

In traffic jams, the emergency services often have to make their way through blocked lanes or across emergency lanes - precious time is lost.

With the rescue lane, you ensure that the emergency services have a clear route.

Emergency and recovery vehicles reach the scene of the accident faster and more safely, injured people are treated more quickly, clean-up work begins sooner and the traffic jam clears up more easily.

A rescue lane must be formed and kept open even when traffic is at a standstill.

What to do in case of a traffic jam?

Form the emergency lane as shown in the following illustrations:

  • Reduce your speed and align your vehicle as parallel to the direction of travel as possible so that the rear of your vehicle does not protrude into the emergency lane.
  • Keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front so that you can manoeuvre.
  • Keep the emergency lane open until traffic is moving again as not all emergency service vehicles are travelling through at the same time.

The emergency lane may only be used by emergency vehicles with light signals or sound signals:

  • Rescue services;
  • Fire brigade;
  • Police;
  • Towing and recovery services;
  • Motorway and road construction administration safety and clean-up vehicles.

Correct behaviour

on roads and motorways with 2 lanes in one direction

  • on the left-hand lane: drive as far to the left as possible
  • on the right-hand lane: swerve to the right as far as possible - even onto the emergency lane

on roads and motorways with 3 lanes in one direction

  • on the left-hand lane: drive as far to the left as possible
  • on the centre and right-hand lanes: swerve as far to the right as possible - even onto the emergency lane

in built-up areas, on roads with one lane in each direction

  • on roads with one lane in each direction: drive to the right-hand edge of the carriageway

at traffic lights

  • at red lights: drive as close as possible to the right-hand edge of the carriageway - if necessary, drive carefully over the stop lines
  • on green: drive to the right-hand edge of the carriageway and allow the emergency services to pass

REMINDER

When merging two lanes into one lane: implement the zip merge system!
