Carsharing
The basic concept of carsharing or share a car is to no longer own a car, but to use a car that is made available by commercial or private parties for a fee that depends on the duration of use.
What is the advantage?
The vehicle does not belong to you and so several users can drive the vehicle depending on availability. Here are the advantages of carsharing:
- no need for your own parking space/car park;
- no recurring costs (insurance, maintenance and technical inspection of the vehicle);
- each user only pays for the duration of the journey and the kilometres driven.
Which strategy for carsharing?
As various studies show, a good carsharing scheme can reduce the number of private vehicles and thus the amount of parking space required.
Studies from Bremen (Germany) show that each carsharing vehicle reduces the number of private cars by 16.
In Switzerland, an average reduction of 1 to 12 is expected, while studies in the United States of America have shown substitution rates of 1 to 18.
Carsharing therefore frees up urban space that was previously used for car parking. This has positive effects, such as:
- the reduction of pollutant emissions;
- a more efficient use of vehicles;
- and less use of valuable public space for car parking.
Carsharing-Stations in public space
The installation of clearly visible carsharing stations in public spaces is an important element in exploiting the substitution potential of car sharing in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Especially in neighbourhoods with high population growth, it is often difficult to set up stations on private property. Carsharing stations on public roads therefore have a particularly important role to play.
To make carsharing attractive, the stations must be
- highly visible;
- intuitively accessible;
- simple and easy to operate.
How can carsharing be integrated into daily mobility?
Carsharing can replace the first car in the household in areas that are well connected to public transport and the supply infrastructure. Carsharing has a particularly good basis in mixed residential and commercial areas.
Demand in the commercial sector tends to be during the week and during the day, while private carsharing demand is strongest in the evenings and at weekends. Above all, carsharing can also replace a second or even third car - especially in many rural or smaller communities where car dependency is higher.
