Active mobility

Road traffic

Walking is the most natural form of mobility and therefore one of the main means of transport which is part of active and urban mobility (with the bicycle, scooter or roller skating), as opposed to motorized modes of transport sometimes called "passive" ". It can also be practiced as a sport or as a hobby.

Walking is healthy, inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

Health

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), regular physical activity is beneficial for health.

Sedentary lifestyle is a public health problem and an estimated 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to lack of exercise.

In resolution WHA66.10, Member States of WHO agreed as a voluntary global target for noncommunicable diseases a 10% reduction in physical inactivity by 2025.

Infrastructures

Among the infrastructures available and even compulsory for pedestrians, we can mention the following:

  • sidewalk;
  • crosswalk;
  • residential area;
  • pedestrian zone;
  • meeting area;
  • shared space;
  • self-hiking trail.

Modal-split 2017

Only 12% of all journeys are made on foot.

Each resident travels on average for 1h27 hours a day (Statec, 2016).

Knowing that 33% of residents' home-work trips are less than 5 km, half of these short trips are made by car.
