Winter tyres Mandatory in Luxembourg in winter conditions

In Luxembourg, in case of winter conditions, you must equip your vehicle with winter tyres or all-season tires (all weather) when driving on public roads.

Winter conditions include:

• black ice;
• packed snow;
• slush;
• icy or frosty surfaces.

Approved tyres bear the following markings:

• MS
• M+S
• MS
• or the Alpine symbol (a drawing of a mountain with a snowflake).

It is mandatory for your car to be fitted with 4 tyres of the same type.

Trucks and buses must also be fitted with winter tyres on all drive axles. The same applies to motorhomes with a maximum authorised mass of over 3,500 kg.

Failure to comply with this measure can result in a fine of 74 euros.

If your vehicle is due for a technical inspection in winter, you must expect that the rims and/or tyres will be subject to type approval, especially if their dimensions do not match those in the vehicle's certificate of conformity. In this context, it is advisable to always bring the technical documents for the rims and/or tyres fitted with you.
