Modal shift

Various European programmes aim to encourage a modal shift from road transport to other modes.

CONNECTING EUROPE FACILITY (CEF)

The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a European Union funding instrument that has been developed specifically to direct investment towards Europe's transport, energy and digital infrastructure to address identified gaps and bottlenecks.

Under the CEF, more than 25.8 billion euro has been made available from the 2021-2027 EU budget to finance projects and studies in EU Member States and, where appropriate, connections to third countries. These projects concern all modes of transport. The majority of projects subsidised in Luxembourg concern rail.

EUROPE'S RAIL

The Europe's Rail project was launched at the end of 2021 by the European Commission to replace its predecessor project SHiFT 2 RAIL. Through innovation, research and the development of new technological solutions, this European partnership aims to create a high-capacity European rail network based on reliability, multimodal transport and flexibility.

Companies interested in taking part in a European call for projects can contact the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works - Directorate-General III Mobility, Traffic and Transport Infrastructure - DG III.2 Railways Service or the European authorities directly.
