At the start of autumn, the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, The Road Safety a.s.b.l. and the Police relaunch their joint awareness campaign "Gitt siichtbar / Sidd opmierksam".

This campaign has a dual road safety objective, namely:

  • to encourage vulnerable road users to make themselves visible, in particular by wearing light-coloured clothing and, even better, by using reflective accessories;
  • to appeal to drivers to pay extra attention and adapt their speed in the presence of vulnerable road users.

The risk of vulnerable road users being involved in a road accident increases considerably because of poor visibility conditions: twilight, darkness, but also fog or rain.

The message is therefore: "Think" - meaning also wearing reflective materials - and "Look", and make yourself visible by wearing appropriate clothing and reflective accessories.

There are plenty of solutions:

DRIVING

  • Wear bright clothing or clothing with built-in reflective elements to be visible at 360°.
  • Use luminous or retro-reflective items on your accessories, briefcases, bags and umbrellas.
  • Walk facing traffic on country roads and wear the obligatory safety waistcoat.
  • Be aware of the speed and distance of approaching vehicles! Make sure you can be seen.
  • Put a reflective collar on your dog.

SPORTIVE

  • Equip yourself with reflective armbands and wear clothing with an integrated reflective element.
  • Wear a safety waistcoat, which is compulsory if you are using the road outside built-up areas.

ON BICYCLE AND SCOOTER

  • Turn on the lights.
  • Check the condition of your brakes and fit reflectors to your bike or scooter.
  • Wear a helmet and suitable clothing with built-in reflective material.

IN THE CAR

  • Turn on the lights when conditions require.
  • Signal your manoeuvres in good time.
  • Adjust your speed. Make sure your car windows are clean!
  • Take into account the potential errors of pedestrians in traffic.

The campaign kicks off this Monday, 28 October 2019.

It will be publicised in the press, via radio adverts, on social networks, on major road signs, on buses in the RGTR network, on trams, on urban digital billboards, by posters as well as by a leaflet distributed together with reflective bracelets during various street marketing actions.

English translation of the radio spot:

It's getting dark earlier and later. So it's time to become visible - think.

When cycling, walking or scooting, always be visible - think - by wearing armbands, clothing or other accessories that are bright and reflective.

In the car, be even more attentive and turn on your lights.

For the safety of us all.

This is a message from the Ministry of Mobility, Road Safety and the Police.
