GoGo Vëlo
The "Tour du Duerf" and "Mam Vëlo op d'Schaff or an d'Schoul" initiatives have been very successful in the past and have helped to mobilize the cycling community. The actions managed to bring together thousands of cyclists from different backgrounds and promote the use of the bicycle as a means of transport in everyday life. Likewise, these actions helped to raise awareness among the population about the importance of sustainable mobility and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
In recent years, the use of the bicycle has increased considerably, so that in 2023 half of the inhabitants will already have used the bicycle. It should be noted that 80% of those who have used it express a desire to do so more often, while a third of those who have not used it, nevertheless, also show interest and a desire to do so. This evolution illustrates the transformation of the bicycle from a niche phenomenon to a mass phenomenon.
To support this success and respond to this growing demand, a new initiative called "GoGo Vëlo" will replace the previous "Tour du Duerf" and "Mam Vëlo op d’Schaff or an d’Schoul" campaigns.
The first official edition of "GoGo Vëlo" will be launched at the start of the 2024 school year with the theme "An 42 Deeg ronderëm d'Welt", an inspiration from the famous adventure novel "Around the World in Eighty Days" by Jules Verne, which opens a new era of opportunities to promote bicycle mobility and consolidates the progress already made in promoting cycling as a means of transport in everyday life.
This unique initiative is the result of the collaboration between Climate Alliance Lëtzebuerg, ProVelo.lu ASBL and the support of the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works. The main objective is to promote the adoption of the bicycle as a means of everyday transport and to find out how many times the participants can cover the circumference of the earth, namely 40,075 km, in six weeks.
"GoGo Vëlo" will be inspired by a concept known in Germany, the "Radbonus". For example, participants record their kilometers traveled via an app and are motivated by various challenges. In addition, they have the opportunity to report the state of cycling infrastructure via the application and thus contribute to its improvement. As part of the sponsorship, attractive gifts and rewards for services provided will be offered.
In this context, the Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, emphasized: "The new "GoGo Vëlo" initiative will be much more than just a platform. It will embody the government's commitment to sustainable mobility. sustainable. I am convinced of that." This campaign will pave the way for a thriving cycling culture in Luxembourg, where every kilometer cycled represents a step towards a more sustainable and friendly future."
Full details of the new campaign platform "GoGo Vëlo" will be announced before the start of the summer holidays.
