Accessibility for people with reduced mobility (PMR) on public transport
Whether a pregnant woman, a broken leg or a person with a physical, mental, intellectual or sensory disability or a permanent medical condition, reduced mobility is when a person has difficulty moving around in public spaces.
Reduced mobility can manifest itself in many different ways and can be temporary or permanent. As mobility is a basic need and must therefore be made possible for all, the necessary measures must be taken to make public transport accessible to persons with reduced mobility (PRM).
This can be done through appropriate infrastructure at stations and bus stops, the equipment of vehicles, but also through information that is accessible to all passengers. For example, information screens and acoustic passenger information in buses, trams and trains facilitate information.
Achievements
Several measures have been taken to improve bus accessibility:
- Introduction of low-floor buses in Luxembourg City and on urban RGTR lines, while adapting bus stops for level entry and exit;
- Introduction of low entry buses on most RGTR lines; these buses have the advantage of easy boarding and alighting for all passengers, including persons with reduced mobility, and offer an optimal number of seats; they are also suitable for intercity transport;
- Several regional buses have been equipped with an electric ramp (lift);
- Public transport equipment: acoustic announcements of the next stop on buses and trains.
Infrastructures
- The P+R Junglinster catchment car park was completed in 2016 and equipped with podotactic surfaces;
- The displays of the line numbers at the bus stops have different colours;
- Document "Recommendations for the installation of bus stops" of the "Verkéiersverbond", made available to municipalities and the public at www.mobiliteit.lu.
Communication
- Information on timetables in real time;
- Development of mobile applications (smartphones, web);
- Online sales of tickets and related products (mShop).
Projects
- further improve the accessibility of RGTR buses;
- all new interchange hub or P+R parking projects will be equipped to also improve accessibility for people with disabilities;
- multimodal information will be produced that takes into account all possible modes of transport and possible barriers to enable customers to plan their journeys easily.
