Excessive speed while driving remains one of the main causes of road accidents, and is an aggravating factor in all cases. This is despite numerous efforts in terms of information, prevention and repression.

With this in mind, La Sécurité Routière, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works (MMTP), has just launched a new joint awareness campaign entitled "Once too fast, the last look".

In 2022, 25% of accidents with serious injuries and 31% of fatal collisions were attributable to excessive or inappropriate speed.

In view of the striking facts revealed by the accident figures, this campaign has been launched to make road users aware of the dangers of speeding and to remind them of the importance of complying with the speed limits in force.

A single speeding offence can be fatal. Just once can be enough for the last second before a collision to be the last look. The focus of the campaign is not on speeding offenders, but on everyone who, for one reason or another, exceeds on speed.

However, whatever the reasons, driving at excessive speed is always unjustifiable.

"Le last look" leaves an open ending, allowing the general public to imagine their own version of the collision scene and its consequences.

As a reminder, as part of the road safety action plan and in pursuit of the Vision Zero strategy - zero deaths and zero serious injuries - significant measures such as the gradual deployment of speed cameras and the introduction of police speed checks are aimed at combating road insecurity in a sustainable way.

Against this backdrop, La Sécurité Routière would like to thank the MMTP for the enormous amount of work it has accomplished.

Paul Hammelmann: "These thanks go, of course, to Minister François Bausch, whose convictions about improving road safety are identical to our own, so much so that we had to reword our eternal 'catalogue of demands' as a 'to-do list'.

But our thanks also go to his staff, past and present, with whom we work closely, efficiently and even amicably. Needless to say, we hope - no, we know - that this approach will continue in the future too.

Over the years, efforts to improve road safety have become less and less a matter of party politics and more a matter of personal conviction, and we are delighted that the new Member of the European Parliament, Martine Kemp, has declared that it is important for the European Union to adopt common European road safety standards and that she is committed to achieving Vision Zero on the European Union's roads by 2050".

The "Once too fast, the last look" campaign is displayed on 46 roadside billboards as well as on CITA (Contrôle et Informations du Trafic sur les Autoroutes) variable message signs.

It is available in three languages and is broadcast on the radio, via banners on the websites of various media, on social networks, on 91 digital and interactive screens in 89 office buildings on the Digital Channel Network, on 30 screens in various car parks, on digital screens in trams and buses and on the full back of 15 buses in the RGTR network and 15 buses in the TICE network.
