Yuriko Backes and Eric Thill presented the 6th edition of the ‘Vëlosummer’ and the next developments of the national cycle path network
At a press conference on 12 June 2025, the Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, and the Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, presented the sixth edition of the ‘Vëlosummer’, the emblematic summer event that invites residents and tourists to (re)discover Luxembourg by bike. The 2025 edition will take place from 19 July to 24 August 2025.
The Vëlosummer is jointly supported by the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Ministry of the Economy and is fully in line with the government's strategy to promote soft mobility and sustainable and citizen-centred tourism. Thanks to a network of signposted routes, this initiative makes it possible to showcase the country's landscapes, heritage and regions in a setting that is accessible to all.
Building on the success of 2024 with more than 31,000 participants, the Vëlosummer 2025 will offer 14 routes spread throughout the national territory. In collaboration with 59 municipalities, several road sections will be temporarily closed to traffic to offer a pleasant and safe cycling experience. Some routes will only be accessible at weekends, others for the entire duration of the edition.
The routes pass through the most emblematic regions of Luxembourg: the wooded hills of the Éislek, the spectacular rock formations of the Mëllerdall, the wine terraces along the Moselle, the peaceful shores of Lake Obersau, the picturesque castles of the Guttland and the Minett with its rich industrial heritage and contrasting landscapes. Along their route, cyclists have the opportunity to discover numerous sights and local attractions.
The Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, said: "The Vëlosummer is a perfect example of our commitment to sustainable, active and high-quality tourism. The event strengthens the attractiveness of our regions and offers a friendly and respectful way to discover the treasures of Luxembourg."
The Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, commented: "I am delighted with the launch of the 6th edition of the Vëlosummer. This initiative demonstrates our shared desire to promote soft mobility and improve the living environment of citizens. It offers a unique opportunity to discover the bicycle both for leisure and as an everyday means of transport."
The ‘Vëlosummer Challenge’ returns to the VisitLuxembourg app in a fun way. Those who complete the fourteen routes and answer the themed quiz questions have the chance to win the symbolic yellow jersey of the 2025 edition.
To help the public plan their routes, an illustrated map has been created showing all the routes. It is available on velosummer.lu along with practical information and downloadable resources. Bike hire is also available along many of the routes and can be booked via visitluxembourg.com/bike-rentals or from the partner providers.
It should be remembered that for the duration of the Vëlosummer, the sections of the routes closed to traffic will remain accessible to residents, public transport and emergency services. In addition, all routes in the area are clearly marked to ensure easy and safe orientation.
