On April 1st 2022, the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and Road Safety (La Sécurité Routière a.s.b.l.) launched the new road safety campaign for motorcyclists "Properly equipped, properly protected".

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and encourage motorcyclists to wear adequate protective clothing by reminding them of the fatal consequences of accidents without proper clothing. The main element of their protection is in their hands: choosing the right equipment!

The campaign aims to make motorcyclists aware of the need to behave responsibly on the road.

The campaign focuses on the whole range of motorbike clothing: helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers and motorbike shoes.

Helmet

It is compulsory to wear an approved helmet.  For optimum protection, a good quality full-face helmet is strongly recommended.  When riding on public roads, motorcyclists are advised to keep the visor clean and to choose a light coloured helmet with reflective elements to improve visibility.

Gloves

In the event of a fall, the severity of injuries to the hands can be high. Gloves with reinforced knuckles and palms that fully cover the hands and wrists are essential. Similarly, the gloves should be waterproof but flexible enough not to interfere with driving.

Regarding clothing, whatever the season, it is essential to wear clothing that provides effective protection against the weather.

Jacket

To ensure optimum safety, a jacket made of leather or anti-abrasive materials such as Kevlar or Cordura, equipped with back, elbow and shoulder protectors, is highly recommended. In case of a fall, other synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon may burn the skin.

Trousers

The choice of trousers with leg protectors and anti-abrasive material (leather, Kevlar, Cordura) is important to ensure better safety.

Boots

It is advisable to wear high, waterproof and non-slip shoes to protect the feet and ankles (boots designed specifically for motorcycling).

The campaign is broadcast on television, radio, in the print and digital media, through banners on various media websites, on social networks, on digital screens in trams and buses and on the full back of buses in the RGTR network. "Properly equipped, properly protected" will also be displayed on road signs, on posters in tram shelters, on posters in meeting and exit areas, at petrol stations, at the driver training centre in Colmar-Berg (and Sanem), at the SNCA, SNCT, DEKRA and LU KS.
