Road Safety Campaign Bicycles - Cyclists "Do you see me?" 1.5 m distance when overtaking!
On 12 May 2023, François Bausch, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility and Public Works, launched a new awareness campaign 'Do you see me?" When overtaking 1.5m distance!', which aims to raise awareness among all drivers of motorised vehicles to respect the mandatory distance of 1.5 m when overtaking a cyclist, both inside and outside built-up areas. This obligation is enshrined in Article 125 of the traffic regulations (Code de la Route). Failure to comply with this provision will result in a fine of 74 euros.
As a particularly efficient means of transport for short and medium distances and perfectly combinable with public transport, the use of bicycles in Luxembourg has increased significantly in recent years. According to statistics on cyclists in the Grand Duchy, almost two thirds of resident households had at least one bicycle in 2020.

Due to the increase in accidents involving cyclists between 2018 and 2020 and the increase in cycling, the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, Road Safety and the Luxembourg Police have launched a new campaign to make road users aware of the importance of the cross-traffic distance of at least 1.5 metres that the driver of a motorised vehicle must keep when overtaking a cyclist. The campaign emphasises the mandatory nature of this measure and the good behaviour required in its implementation.
At the press conference, François Bausch stressed: "Every cyclist knows the unpleasant situation when a vehicle comes too close to them when overtaking. However, most of them know that there is a minimum distance to be observed. They don't know what 1.5 metres is." real. With this new campaign, we want to make cyclists and motorists aware of mutual respect in public traffic and thus make our roads safer."
"Our goal is more than just a reminder of a mandatory measure. We need to get out of this vicious emotional circle where users blame each other. We need to literally normalise coexistence between vulnerable and motorised users to achieve greater safety especially for active mobility," added Road Safety Director Isabelle Medinger.
The new campaign "Do you see me? 1.5 m distance when you take over!" is broadcast on the radio, in the digital press, on banners on various media sites, on social networks, on 91 digital and interactive screens in 79 office buildings, on the Digital Channel Network, on 46 screens in various car parks, on the digital screens in trams and buses and on the entire back of 12 buses of the RGTR network. It can also be seen on 45 road signs on the national transport network.
