Road safety campaign of the Grand Ducal Police on the topic of distracted driving "Eyes on the road"

From 19 to 29 June 2023, the police will carry out checks specifically focusing on distracted driving in order to raise awareness and reduce the number of road accidents.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is one of the main causes of road accidents. Sending messages, but also using apps or social media take up a lot of the driver's attention span. In fact, the smartphone distracts the driver's attention on a visual as well as on an auditory, physical and cognitive level.

For this reason, the use of mobile phones by the driver of a moving vehicle is regulated in Article 170bis of the Highway Code. Road users who do not comply with these regulations risk warnings, taxed at 145 euros, and the loss of two points.

However, not only the use of mobile phones, but also lighting cigarettes, operating instruments or the navigation system and even talking on a hands-free device are sources of distraction. In this context, the police offer a wealth of information and safety tips on their website.

Furthermore, it is not only drivers who are affected by distractions. Other road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists or pedestrians can also be affected.

In the spirit of education and awareness, practical tips and information on distracted driving will also be disseminated on police social media in the coming days.

Documents on board

As is customary during traffic checks, on-board documents will also be checked in connection with this campaign. As a reminder, drivers must have and be able to show the following documents:

  • Driving licence or training certificate;
  • Internship book (if available);
  • Certificate of insurance for the vehicle;
  • Registration certificate;
  • Latest technical inspection certificate (if applicable);
  • Tax sticker;
  • Certificate of conformity/copy certified by SNCA (for all vehicles registered from 1 February 2016).

    With the exception of the certificate of conformity, all documents must be presented in their original version.
