Winter tyres
Frequently asked questions about winter tyres requirements in LuxembourgRegarding the scope of the obligation to fit winter tyres
Why is it necessary to have winter tyres, given that the Highways Agency can clear snow from main roads within a few hours?
Luxembourg experiences significant regional, transit and cross-border traffic flows during rush hour. As demonstrated in the past, a single vehicle with unsuitable tyres can cause an accident that blocks many other road users on their way.
The requirement to fit winter tyres in winter conditions was introduced in Luxembourg on 1 October 2012. Is there a deadline for using winter tyres in spring?
Driving with winter tyres is only required if weather and road conditions necessitate it. This is a rule of conduct related to road conditions and not a general obligation; therefore, there is no deadline at the end of winter.
The regulation in question applies throughout the year.
Furthermore, driving with winter tyres is not prohibited during the summer season, but it is obviously not recommended.
Does the obligation to drive with winter tyres still apply if there is snow on the pavements and in the fields, but not on the road?
The rule applies only to the condition of the road surface.
If the road surface is clean and completely clear of snow, it is still possible to drive without winter tyres.
Who checks whether my vehicle has winter tyres: the National Technical Inspection Organisation (SNCT) or the Grand Ducal Police?
Technical inspection is not an issue, as the presence of winter tyres on the vehicle is related to weather conditions.
Only officers of the Grand Ducal Police are authorised to issue fines for non-compliance with the law (a warning fine of €74).
Is there any financial assistance available for people who cannot afford to buy winter tyres?
The Government invests considerable sums in the organisation and infrastructure of public transport, so that everyone can travel for work and private purposes.
There are no subsidies on winter tyres for private or business vehicles.

Are all-weather tyres equivalent to winter tyres?
Provided that the tyres are marked "M + S", "M. S." or "M & S", they are considered valid by the text.
The abbreviation "M" refers to "mud" and "S" to "snow".
Is my 4x4 vehicle exempt from the winter tyres regulations?
No, 4x4 vehicles are subject to the same requirements as other categories of cars. They must be fitted with tyres as defined in the text.
On my car, is it sufficient to fit winter tyres on only 2 of the 4 wheels?
No, all four wheels must be fitted with winter tyres in winter conditions. It is not sufficient to fit them only on the front or rear wheels.
Only on buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles, as well as motorhomes with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3,500 kg, is it possible to fit winter tyres only on the drive axles.
Is it possible to fit four different types of winter tyres on my car?
No, it is generally prohibited in Luxembourg to mix different types of tyres.
You must fit four tyres of the same type on your car.
Would it be acceptable to equip our lorries with chains that we fit to our tyres in winter conditions?
No, fitting snow chains does not exempt you from the requirements regarding winter tyres.
What should you pay attention to during a visit to the SNCT test centre?
If you need to take your vehicle for a technical inspection during the winter season, be prepared for the possibility that your vehicle's rims and/or tyres may have to undergo an approval procedure, particularly if their dimensions do not match those listed on your vehicle's certificate of conformity.
To this end, always make sure you have the technical documents relating to the rims and/or tyres with you.
