Further information

Since 1978, the General Road Transport Regime (RGTR) has provided national bus services. Today, it is the most important provider of public transport services in Luxembourg. A reorganization has become necessary over time, in order to meet the growing needs of mobility.

The reorganization project has been made up of different stages since 2016. Surveys and studies as well as Workshops and Roadshows have been carried out in order to study the network currently in place and find an efficient reorganization in order to optimize flows. The municipalities were invited to vote and many adaptations could still be made to this project.

The new numbering of the lines consists on the one hand of a first number which indicates the main axis, that is to say the region, towards which the bus line is heading and which is followed by numbers indicating the different types. on duty. We differ here between:

  • express lines
  • primary regional lines
  • regional secondary lines
  • transverse lines
  • local lines.

The express lines make it possible to quickly connect a large number of people and localities. The local lines will be in perfect harmony with the express lines. The regional lines have a high frequency and connect their region by serving each stop. The transverse lines will link the agglomerations outside the City of Luxembourg.

The main principles of the reorganization are summed up by a balanced coverage of the territory by an organized, legible, efficient and easily usable network for customers. In addition, services will be extended until 11 p.m. on the main lines on Saturday and Sunday evenings. In view of all these changes, it requires more efficient planning of the various bus infrastructures such as bus lanes, interchange points and stops.

The first changes will be implemented in May 2020 before the new network will be fully implemented in September 2021.

In order to present this new network, the Minister of Mobility and Public Works François Bausch invited municipal officials, as well as all interested residents, to regional conferences on the future organization of regional RGTR bus lines (before the health situation linked to COVID-19):
