The amended law of 11 June 1996 authorising the construction of a new airport terminal made it possible to build a new main terminal, a terminal for small aircraft, an underground car park, a cogeneration plant and to develop the surrounding area.

Construction work on terminal A was completed at the beginning of 2008, so that the terminal known as Aéroport de Luxembourg (Luxembourg Airport) was brought into service in April 2008 by the operator, Lux-Airport.

At the time, the new terminal provided a clear improvement in passenger comfort and met the need to modernise Luxembourg's airport infrastructure by adapting it to the current and future economic context.

The old terminal, designed in 1975 to handle some 1.2 million passengers a year, was no longer able to meet the demands of the 21st century and no longer reflected the image of a modern, forward-looking Luxembourg.

The main terminal meets four major requirements: functionality, safety, security and design. It extends over four levels and houses all the functional infrastructures relating to the terminal's operational layout.

The ground floor is exclusively dedicated to departure activities. It welcomes the public and provides all passenger services.

Level -1, which is dedicated to arrivals, also serves the underground car park.

For maximum user comfort, the ‘departure’ and ‘arrival’ areas form a single enclosure.

Terminal B was renovated at a total cost of €4.5 million and reopened in July 2017. Terminals A and B are directly linked by a footbridge.
