Points-based driving licence

The points-based driving license was introduced in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 2002. Each driver's license carries a capital of 12 points.

It is a repressive safety measure, as for each serious violation of the road traffic regulations, the driver's points balance is reduced accordingly. This applies to both holders of a Luxembourg driver's license and those with a foreign driver's license who are issued a virtual driver's license.

The loss of all points results in a suspension of the driver's license for a period of 12 months.

In 2015, the points-based driving license was revised, and a new points scale (in French: barème) was introduced.

The catalogue of fines can be consulted in the Grand-Ducal Regulation of 22 May 2015, which amends in particular the amended Grand-Ducal Regulation of 26 August 1993 on fines, deposits for non-resident offenders and measures for the enforcement of the legislation on the seizure of vehicles and the points-based driving licence (in French: règlement grand-ducal du 22 mai 2015 modifiant notamment le règlement grand-ducal modifié du 26 août 1993 relatif aux avertissements taxés, aux consignations pour contrevenants non-résidents ainsi qu’aux mesures d’exécution de la législation en matière de mise en fourrière des véhicules et en matière de permis à points).
