The tram arrives at Luxembourg Airport

Completion of the first tram line

This Sunday, Yuriko Backes, Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, Patrick Goldschmidt, Deputy Mayor for Mobility, representatives of the municipality of Niederanven, Helge Dorstewitz, Managing Director of Luxtram, and their guests inaugurated the new tram section between "Luxexpo" and "Findel-Luxembourg Airport".

With its arrival at Luxembourg Airport, the tram reaches an important milestone and marks the completion of the first tram line, which now serves 24 stations, including ten multimodal interchange points. Thanks to the commitment and mobilization of all stakeholders, the goal of commissioning was achieved.

Yuriko Backes, Minister of Mobility and Public Works, expressed her delight: "The tram is reaching a crucial phase in its expansion, thus strengthening the attractiveness of public transport. The commissioning of the tram at the airport represents a major step forward, facilitating access and offering an efficient and sustainable mobility alternative. At the same time, numerous studies are underway, particularly on the development of a high-speed tram in the south of the country, but also on improving the network within Luxembourg City. My priority remains to invest extensively in public transport infrastructure in order to offer our citizens an increasingly high-quality and attractive service."

Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, expressed her delight: "The arrival of the tram at the airport represents real added value for both the capital's residents and visitors, both in terms of accessibility and quality of life. It also marks the completion of the first tram line, serving more than 20 stations, including 10 interchange hubs. Combined with an efficient urban bus network perfectly adapted to the tram's developments, the tram is more than ever assuming its role as the backbone of our multimodal mobility concept. Against this backdrop, future tram extensions aimed at connecting current and future large residential areas to public transport are now at the heart of our priorities."

Particular attention was paid to the design of the spaces crossed by the tram

The new section fits seamlessly into the city center's developments. A generous green area on the platform enhances the existing plant life. The tram platform, which crosses the forest, is covered with regional materials and features a natural rainwater drainage system. Along the new boulevard, the platform is planted with vegetation, including regional species that do not require irrigation.

As part of the project, 3.2 hectares of trees were removed along the A1 motorway. All work required prior approval from the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development. Starting in February 2022, new trees – oaks and beeches – were planted at selected locations in the municipalities of Junglinster, Lorentzweiler, and Niederanven. These plantings, covering a total area of 8.6 hectares, promote the creation of new habitats for wildlife.

On this route, after leaving the "Luxexpo" station, the tram crosses the "Tramsschapp" site, crosses the new bridge, and then crosses the "Gréngewald" forest along the A1 motorway. For a two-kilometer stretch, the tram travels at speeds of up to 70 km/h before entering the funnel, one wall of which is decorated with an artistic fresco created by students of the Lycée des Arts et Métiers under the direction of Luxembourg artist Yves-Laurent Grosbusch. Upon exiting, the tram serves the first multimodal interchange in "Héienhaff", then continues along the new boulevard and crosses the Findel commercial area to reach the airport, the second interchange, and the new terminus.

A project realized thanks to multidisciplinary teams

The 3.9-kilometer-long extension consists of a 110-meter-long civil engineering structure spanning the A1 motorway. The steel deck, prefabricated in Belgium, was assembled in two semi-structures on either side of the A1 motorway and connected by a sliding process in spring 2023. The recyclable aluminum structure guarantees stability, durability, and optimal integration into the landscape.
