Mertert river port
The Port of Mertert was originally created by a law of 1963, which was repealed and replaced by the amended law of 31 March 2000 concerning the administration and operation of the Port of Mertert. It is located on the territory of the municipalities of Mertert and Grevenmacher on the left bank of the Moselle and has a total surface area of 65 hectares. The two quays along the dock are 1.6 km long. The Port of Mertert is the only place in Luxembourg where the three modes of transport - rail, road and inland waterway - are interconnected.
The products transhipped are mainly:
- steel products;
- petroleum products;
- agricultural products;
- construction materials and containers.
The amended law of 31 March 2000 grants the administration and operation of the Port of Mertert to Société du Port de Mertert S.A., a public limited company incorporated under Luxembourg law by notarial deed on 3 July 1964. The concession is for a renewable period of 99 years. The concession was granted to companies with exclusively private capital.
Tanklux S.A. operates the oil quay, which has a storage capacity of 62,000 m3. Luxport S.A. operates the North and South quays of the port dock.
The State is responsible for the construction, extension, modernisation and constructive maintenance of the internal transport networks, such as roads and railways, and their equipment, as well as for the construction and development of the port.
