Public transport

The project for the redevelopment of Ettelbruck station includes - for the purposes of the road fund managed by the National Roads Administration - a "road construction" module, which includes the construction of a new bus station in front of the current "Verband" site, as well as the redevelopment of the roads in the station district. This project includes the underground relocation of the N7 national road and the reconstruction of the Patton Bridge with dedicated lanes for buses and bicycles.

The reconstruction of the station's passenger building is another important element required for the realisation of the entire project. Indeed, the current building is located on the route of the tunnel to be built in the cut and will be replaced by a new building that meets the current needs of public transport customers (trains, buses, active mobility).

The aim is to create a modern and comfortable infrastructure that meets future operational requirements and the development of passenger flows and is accessible to people with reduced mobility (PRM).

All adaptations to the railway facilities will be carried out in accordance with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI), Infrastructure, Control-Command and Signalling, Energy and PRM.

Key figures

  • Passenger building: total gross area of 3,791 m2
  • P+R capacity: 430 spaces
  • Cost of the project:
    • Railway fund: 98 million euros plus VAT
    • Road fund: 38 million euros plus VAT
  • Number of tracks on the platform: 5
  • Number of bus platforms: 12
  • Space for bicycles: 100

Objectives

The aim of the "Multimodal interchange hub at the Ettelbruck railway station" project is to prepare one of Luxembourg's busiest railway stations for the needs of the coming decades, in direct connection with the development of the "Nordstad".

This new hub, which will be a key element of the "Nordstad", will meet the needs of all public transport users. Customers will benefit from a higher quality of service and greater stability of train timetables. The project takes into account an integrative approach between the modules of the station and the neighbouring urban planning to ensure a city entrance or station forecourt of high functional and urban quality.

Current status

From a railway point of view, the passenger building was demolished so that the road authorities could build a subway for the new N7 road. The new passenger building will be built on top of this subway to better meet the needs of modern operations and a growing number of railway customers. Part of the building is made available to the Grand Ducal Police. A new platform and a new subway for travellers were built on the other side of the construction site. The station's track layout has been adapted to the new situation. Once this phase is complete, the existing platforms will be renovated and adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility.
