Free mobility The icing on the cake of the innovative multimodal transport strategy implemented in Luxembourg
On the initiative of the government, since 1st March 2020, Luxembourg is proud to be the 1st country in the world where public transport is free for all modes of transport, whether these are buses, trains (except 1st class) or trams throughout the national territory.
This measure applies to residents, cross-border workers and tourists.
Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Mobility and Public Works François Bausch considers systematic and continuous investments to be a sine qua non for promoting the attractiveness of public transport. The choice, punctuality and quality of the services offered are essential to encourage citizens to change their habits and to favor public transport rather than the car.
These parameters can only be improved through a multimodal transport concept (modu2.lu) and the PNM 2035 - National mobility plan (pnm2035.lu):
- systematic expansion of the capacity of the national rail network;
- by doubling the current number of P + R relay parking spaces (in particular at the borders, in order to provide a comfortable connection for the 200,000 cross-border workers who travel to Luxembourg every day);
- real-time informations to passengers;
- a complete overhaul of the national network of bus lines and the switch to alternative propulsion technology for the fleet by 2030;
- an increase in the number of electric car charging points across the country, which will reach 1,600 units by the end of 2020;
- a homogeneous network of cycle paths;
- the expansion of regional tramways;
- the use of a future third lane on our highways for carpooling and buses;
- ...
All of these projects are on track and are part of our multimodal offer.
"The introduction of free public transport is an important social measure. This is the icing on the cake as part of our overall strategy for a multimodal revolution. Apart from this aspect, we would like to salute all those who have already made the choice of public transport", declared François Bausch.
