The rapid tramway and its multimodal context between Luxembourg City and the Southern region

On October 21, 2020, François Bausch presented the project for a rapid tramway and its multimodal corridor between Luxembourg City and the Southern Region, in the presence of the mayors of Esch-sur-Alzette, Leudelange, Luxembourg City, Mondercange, Schifflange, and Sanem.

"The development of our country requires an attractive and efficient mobility service between our two main economic hubs," emphasized Minister François Bausch.

Indeed, the Southern Region and the southwest of Luxembourg City are experiencing rapid growth. Human exchanges between Luxembourg City and the Southern Region will increase in both directions.

The objective is to connect these two hubs with a rapid tramway running every 7 minutes during peak hours, with a travel time of 14 minutes between Cloche d'Or and the Alzette district in Esch-sur-Alzette. The project includes:

13 new tram stations;
17.5 km of route, including 10 km with a potential speed of 100 km/h;
5 new interchange hubs;
1 new wildlife crossing;
and nearly 20 related road projects (highway optimization, highway interchange upgrades, traffic calming measures in adjacent communities).

The new multimodal corridor and the rapid tramway not only address the chronic congestion on the A4 motorway, but also allow the municipalities of the Southern Region to reorganize mobility within their local areas.

François Bausch is confident that a preliminary draft bill for financing the aforementioned projects will be submitted before the end of 2022.

Finally, the minister thanked the municipalities involved for their excellent cooperation on this matter. Local elected officials and the minister agree that the rapid tramway will be a link between the strengths of the Southern Region and the assets of the Luxembourg metropolitan area, such as culture, education, the university, research, and the airport.
